Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Sherwood Park

At Acacia Dental Centre, we recognize that wisdom tooth extraction in Sherwood Park is sometimes the best option for preserving oral health. If you need one or more teeth removed, you can rely on us to provide gentle, comprehensive care in a warm, nurturing environment. We understand that the process of having a tooth extracted can be daunting, and we pledge to make every attempt to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure – with or without conscious sedation.

Most problems with wisdom teeth develop between the ages of 15 and 25; after the age of 30 your risk of developing problems with your wisdom teeth decreases.  Some examples of the complications that can occur when your wisdom teeth erupt, include crowding of your other teeth if your jaw is not big enough; your wisdom teeth may be impacted (trapped under the jaw bone) and unable to break through your gums; your wisdom teeth may erupt only partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them creating space for food debris and bacteria to get trapped and become infected.  If your wisdom teeth are not causing problems now, it may be difficult to decide whether to have them removed to prevent possible dental problems later in life and you may never have any problems with your wisdom teeth.

The Decision to Remove Wisdom Teeth

There are slight risks involved with any surgery, but it is generally considered easier to remove the wisdom teeth in younger people (late teens and early 20s) because the roots of their wisdom teeth are not fully developed and the jawbone is not as dense.  The easier it is to remove the tooth, the easier your recovery is likely to be.  The decision to have your wisdom teeth removed is either made to correct an active problem or to prevent problems that may come up in the future.  At Acacia Dental Centre we can help you make an informed decision about wisdom teeth removal based on your oral and overall health.  If your dentist has advised that your wisdom teeth may cause problems in the future and you have a medical condition that may get worse over time, consider having them removed while you are healthy.

Having Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

If you and your dentist come to the conclusion that it is best to remove your wisdom teeth, the procedure involves using a local anesthetic to control pain.  For added comfort we can offer our patients conscious sedation for some dental procedures at our Sherwood Park clinic.  Conscious sedation refers to the administration of an oral, I.V., or inhaled sedative for the purpose of placing a patient in a relaxed state for their dental procedure, such as wisdom teeth removal.  The patient remains awake and able to communicate the entire time.  The procedure to remove an erupted wisdom tooth is usually similar to any other tooth extraction.  For impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth, the dentist will open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. The tissue connecting the tooth to the bone will then be separated and the tooth removed.  Sometimes it is necessary to cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.  Stitches may be used to suture gum tissue to help prevent infection at the extraction site. All dental procedures provided by a general dentist.
